It has already become a tradition: during the night of 12/13 August, when the Earth winds through a cloud of matter left by the Swift-Tuttle comet, we meet in the Discovery Park of the Copernicus Science Centre to watch this astronomical show together! That night is the peak of the meteors from the Perseid meteor shower, sometimes called shooting stars.
They are very easy to observe – just lie on the blanket, on a deckchair or simply on the grass and look up to the sky. You should be able spot the first meteors after just a couple of minutes. The darker place we choose for observation, the more shooting start we will see. In Poland top regions for observing meteors are still the Masuria and Bieszczady Mountains.
For those who will remain in the city, things will be a bit harder as a large number of city lights limits our view range allowing us to see only the brightest stars. However, we will try to improve the conditions of city observations. Especially for you, for the time of the Perseid meteor shower observation above the Discovery Park, we will turn off the illumination of the whole Copernicus Science Centre, the Heavens of Copernicus Planetarium and the Discovery Park. But that’s not all!
As each year, the Municipal Roads Authority will switch off all the lights of the Świętokrzyski, Śląsko-Dąbrowski and Poniatowski Bridges. We will also switch off the Kahl Square, the glass exits of the Wisłostrada Tunnel and some street lights at the exit of the Copernicus underground station. Moreover, especially for that night, PGE Narodowy will switch off the illumination of the National Stadium. This year, for the first time, our neighbours — Museum on the Vistula and Innogy — will also turn off the lights.
Discovery Park, Kahl Sqare and the Vistula boulevards will be the best locations in Warsaw to watch the meteors.
Food will be available from foodtrucks located at the CSC car park.
